BBSP’s Embedded Counselor

The School of Medicine has a trained mental health provider who works with PhD students: Zoe Silverman, MSW, LCSW. Zoe is available to meet with students one-on-one to address mental health concerns by providing short-term counseling and referral to additional resources. To make an appointment with Zoe, email her at zoe.silverman@unc.edu. In addition, all students have access to UNC’s Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS).

Heels Care Network

The Heels Care Network website is a place for all Tar Heels — undergraduate, graduate and professional students, and post-docs, as well as faculty and staff — to come together in support of each other and access the many mental health and well-being resources at Carolina. It is a gateway for mental health and wellness resources for everyone on campus: to find a support group, learn strategies for mental health, connect with trainings and advocacy organizations or find wellness events on campus.

UNC Campus Health

UNC Campus Health offers many different services right on campus. This includes primary care, immunizations, allergy services, gynecology, transgender health services, and a lot more.

Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan (GSHIP)

BBSP students are enrolled in the BlueCross BlueShield GSHIP health insurance plan (also known as the RA or TA Plan). For more information about using GSHIP at Campus Health, see this page. Students can enroll a spouse, child, or other dependent on their GSHIP plan.

UNC does not currently offer a dental insurance plan to students. Many graduate students use the services of the clinics in the UNC School of Dentistry, including free dental screening, cleanings, and fillings (listed on their Student Health Action Coalition page). Your health insurance will also cover some major dental procedures. UNC Campus Health has dental care through Campus Smiles, and they offer a dental insurance plan from BrightSmile. The Graduate School website lists different dental insurance options that you may consider. Some students add a dental insurance plan from BlueCross BlueShield.
