Dave directs the BBSP first year training program. In this role he oversees the First Year Group seminar course, the rotation and academic calendars, and helping students acclimate to graduate school and UNC. He provides one-on-one and group advising for students and faculty, and he develops programming focused on student success. Dave also leads the OGE’s mentor training for faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and research staff.
In addition, Dave implements education research projects related to graduate education, in collaboration with the OGE’s PhDIRECT Lab and the Pittman Teaching Lab. Prior to working at UNC, Dave oversaw career development for master’s and doctoral students at Duke. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at North Carolina Central University, conducting research on breast cancer and biology education. He obtained his PhD in Genetics and Genomics from Duke, studying cerebrovascular genetics.
